Windows 8 has been released with so many new features which was not available in older operating systems. One element you might have already noticed Metro UI explorer in Windows 8. Many third-party developers have start creating programs that can be used as an alternative to Windows 8 Explorer, and that adopt the same look as the Windows 8 Metro Start Screen. I am discussing here about one tool which has been released recently and its name is Immersive Explorer version 0.1.
Immersive Explorer is designed to be an alternative to the default file explorer included in Windows 8 (known as Windows Explorer). Its interface in many ways represents Metro style interface of Windows 8 applications. The best thing about this program is it supports Windows 8 as well as Windows 8 also. Users who likes the Metro UI of windows 8 can use in Windows 7 too through this software.
The another benefit of this program is simple to use and does not require you to use any administrative privileges for running it on your PC. The interface of Windows 8 explorer alternative has been mainly optimized for touch-based gestures but it is capable of supporting all the keyboard and mouse functions as well.
When you start Immersive Explorer, it will run in full-screen mode and display its Metro-styled interface. At present, it supports picture viewing, MD5 /SHA1 hash calculation, local file system browsing (no network drive support yet).
Some other basic functions such as:
- Cut
- Copy
- Paste
- Renaming
- Viewing properties
- Creating new folders
- Viewing images using built-in photo application
Features that will be supported in the near future:
- caching and performance improvements
- audio and video playback (using wmp codecs)
- touchscreen support (gestures like pinch to zoom)
- picture manipulation (rotate, crop, and mass resize)
- file system operations: move, copy, delete, rename
- advanced view filters and sorting
System Requirements for Immersive Explorer:
- Windows 7 or Windows 8
- A Core 2 Duo processor or better
- At least 1 GB of ram
- .NET Framework 4 (present by default in Windows 8, but not on Windows 7)
