All of us use the drag-and-drop feature available in Windows to move a file from one folder to another or one place to another place. The default behaviour of drag-and-drag feature depends on whether you are doing the action on the same partition or from one partition to another partition.
When you drag-and-drop a file from one folder to another on the same partition (C:\A to C:\B), Windows moves the file from folder A to B. However, when you drag-and-drop a file from one partition to another partition (C:\A to F:\B), the file is copied instead. You can change the default behaviour of drag-and-drop feature by holding Alt, Ctrl, and Shift keys while doing the action.
When a user holds Alt key while dragging-and-dropping a file from window A to window B, Windows copies the file instead of moving. Like wise, you can create a shortcut of the file by holding Ctrl key while doing drag-and-drop operation. Pressing Shift key will move the file from one place to another place.
Users who regularly use the drag-and-drop feature in Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 operating systems may want to change the default behaviour of the feature. For instance, you may want to copy a file when a file is dragged from window A to window B on the same partition (C:\A to C:\B).
As you can see, the user interface is very simple. Just click on the action what you want to have by default. This will not affect keyboard modifiers for drag-n-drop, but changes keyboard-free action. You many choose between three availabe default actions easily:
Copy file
Move file
Create shortcuts
